"A quick scan of the song titles on this disc will be your first clue Wally Pleasant is probably not just another navel-gazing singer/songwriter. Consider: 'Post Graduate Overeducated Out of Work Blues,' 'Song for Bob Dylan,' 'Dysfunctionally Yours,' 'Alternateen,' 'Toxic Waste Block Party'; the list goes on. Then a quick spin through the disc will confirm it: Pleasant is definitely not-in the words of Elvis Costello-in the 'screw me, I'm sensitive' genre of song writing. While some folks don rose-colored glasses, Pleasant seems to see through some slightly cracked kaleidoscope specs. But like the best wits, he tells the truth while tickling your toes. On the beat-happy 'Dysfunctionally Yours,' he confesses, 'If I had a nickel for every time you called me a stupid jerk/I'd probably have about $4.35,' and then reasons, 'It's relationships like ours that keep psychiatrists employed.' The alternative clones (is that an oxymoron?) get skewered in 'Alternateen': 'We can walk together into this mosh pit of life,' and then go to Lollapalooza and 'pay $5.00 for a glass of water,' and 'take a risk and buy a compact disc / By a band no one's ever heard of 'She nails every aspect of the 'mall-ternative kid' life. If indeed there is a time to laugh and a time to cry, there's no doubt how Wally's watch is set." - Performing Songwriter
